Special Features of a Surgical Wound

We at Alpha Wundexperten understand the special nature of surgical wounds. Unlike other wounds, they are caused by an intentional medical procedure. Our service ensures optimal wound healing through excellent care.

Wound Care After Surgery at Home

In many cases, wound healing takes place at home – only initial care is provided in the clinic directly after the operation. Sometimes a so-called wound revision is necessary to prevent complications. Wound revision includes thorough inspection of the wound and possibly surgical treatment of the wound to prevent healing disorders and infections. This special attention is particularly important when the patient suffers from Epidermolysis bullosa.

The Two Types of Surgical Wounds

Experts distinguish between a closed and an open surgical wound:

  • When the surgical wound is closed with stitches, meaning the edges are connected with sutures in the operating room, we speak of primary wound healing. After about 7 days, the reconstruction of the epidermis is complete. A permanent scar has formed after 12 or 18 months. Healing usually occurs without complications and the Alpha Wundexperten often only need to prevent a pressure ulcer (decubitus).
  • More complicated is the care of an open surgical wound, whose edges cannot be brought together or are intentionally left open. The latter is done for deep wounds where a drain is inserted to facilitate the drainage of blood or pus. Such wounds require intensive care and monitoring so that infections can be detected in time.

Surgical Wound Care for an Open Wound

The wound management and treatment of an open surgical wound is significantly more complicated. After removing dead or nerve-free tissue, the nursing staff applies wound dressings to support wound healing through a moist wound environment. Dressing changes are performed regularly under aseptic conditions.

What happens besides wound revision after surgery

What Happens Besides Wound Revision After Surgery

Three factors that can cause delayed surgical wound healing are central:

  • Patient’s general condition: We assess whether the patient smokes, is in poor nutritional condition, or has diabetes.
  • Wound-related factors: Our experts watch for signs of infection, insufficient oxygen supply to the tissue, or hematomas.
  • Additional stressors: Stress or extensive burns can further delay healing.

How We Care for Closed Surgical Wounds

We cover the wound closed with stitches with a protective wound dressing. Additionally, we clean the wound until the stitches or staples are removed after 5 to 15 days. The treatment focuses on minimizing the risk of infection and quickly achieving a cosmetically acceptable scar.

Help When the Surgical Wound Still Discharges After 3 Weeks

As part of the personal wound visit, we pay attention to how long a wound continues to discharge after the operation is completed. While a closed wound should only discharge for a few days, it can be normal if an open surgical wound still discharges after 3 weeks.

Our medical staff checks for any inflammatory reactions. Typical signs are local redness and warming of the wound area. Fever indicates an advanced wound infection.

We involve a doctor when the following occurs:

  • A scar begins to bleed
  • The patient develops a fever
  • The scar or wound emits an unpleasant odor.
  • A scar is painful or feels hard to the touch.

A Challenge – Open Wounds in the Anal Area After Surgery

Despite extensive experience, an open wound in the anal area after surgery is a challenge even for the Alpha Wundexperten. Typically, blood and mucus are consistently present on the stool and on the wound dressings. This can persist for up to 8 weeks.

The most important thing is to ensure a soft but formed stool so that the patient can empty the anal canal without strong pressure. The consistency of the stool is more important than the frequency of bowel movements. Bowel movements can occur multiple times a day or only every other day.

Tips to Accelerate Internal Wound Healing After Surgery

For surgical wounds, internal healing is just as important as external wound healing. Therefore, the patient must avoid intensive physical training in the days following the surgical procedure. Additionally, a healthy lifestyle is important. The patient should avoid nicotine and alcohol and pay attention to their diet.

This term refers to the treatment of a wound using surgical techniques, for example, closing it with a suture.

Symptoms include redness, swelling, pain, or warming of the area.

The suture is covered with a dressing. It must be kept dry for 1 to 2 days if closed with non-absorbable material. Other sutures must be kept dry for longer.
